My name is Matt and I’m the Social Media Manager here at Volusion. Welcome to Two Minute Tuesdays, where we give you two minutes of ecommerce advice to bolster your online success. There’s a lot of talk about what you should and shouldn’t be doing in SEO, but today we’re going to focus on the shouldn’t. With that in mind, I’d like to present to you the five biggest fails of bad SEO. First off, you want to avoid stale content. You have to remember that search engines start by finding your site through spiders, and these spiders love fresh content. So whether it’s updating your blog or adding new content pages to your ecommerce site, make sure that you’re keeping you content fresh and valuable to your customers. The second epic fail of SEO is what we can keyword stuffing. Let’s say you find the keywords that you want to target for a specific web page and all you do is jam them into your content as frequently as possible. This practice is a big no-no because Google will soon find you and hand over a penalty. Even worse, your readers are going to know what you’re up to and won’t be interested in what you have to say. Epic fail number three is ignoring the long tail. Long tail keywords consists of search queries at about 4 to 6 words in length, and are a lot less common than more general keywords that drive the majority of traffic to your site. Creating content around these long tail keywords is a great way to get more targeted traffic directly to your website. Fourth on our list is spammy links. Google just released their latest Penguin update and this really penalizes people who are taking advantage of link networks, buying links and using shady link directories, so be careful and always try to earn links that come to your site. The last epic fail is the biggest of all time when it comes to SEO, and that’s focusing your efforts solely on search engines. Remember, search engines can’t purchase from you or read your content; only people can. If you’re putting together quality content that people want to engage with, you’re naturally going to have higher search engine rankings. Keep this list of epic fails in mind to avoid one of your own. Google will like you, your customers will find you and that’ll help boost sales, which is always a good thing.
